Ironman would not have become a crime fighter if he didn't have shrapnel in his chest. He first wore the suit to keep the shrapnel from digging its way into his heart. Thats how ironman was made so if he never got hit with shrapnel then he'd still be a normal rich guy. The shrapne changd his life and he's going to be ironman for a long time.
